Changes in Riga, and at the Positivus Festival

Thousands of people from all over the world gather in Austin, Texas each March for the South By Southwest Music Conference and Festival. They come back for Austin Psych Fest in the late spring,...
On the Friday night of Psych Fest, 2013, the weather was perfect and the bands were groovy.
The first band I saw after driving straight from Houston was the middle-eastern sounds of Tinariwen.
This was followed by a blistering performance by the Suuns, which was just as intense as their show during SXSW 2013.
I’ve been to a lot of music festivals, but I’d never been to Austin Psych Fest before this weekend.
In many ways the festival felt a lot more hippie and a lot less corporate than a lot of music festivals.
(It would be harder to get much more corporate than South By Southwest or the Austin City Limits Music Fesival!)

It might be the 6th year of the Austin Psych Fest, but I’ve never been to the party. However, I have seen some of the bands who are playing at the festival play in the past, and I’m looking forward to seeing them play again this weekend!
Austin Psych Fest is this weekend, April 26-28 2013, at Carson Creek Ranch.
If you are, er, directionally challenged like me, this should strike fear into your heart. Or at least get you to add an extra hour into your festival planning!
Recently there was an article in the Huffington Post by David Landsel, about how Austin is way overrated, and Houston is a lot better. I wasn’t even slightly surprised when I read this article. I don’t think the article has much truth or insight to it, it’s just blowback from the fact that the locus of our collective Americian fantasy of the “magical elsewhere” happens to be currently located in Austin, Texas.
Every era gets the magical elsewhere it deserves. The magical elsewhere is the spot where you don’t have to work overly hard and dreams come true. It’s the land of milk and honey and the promise of romance and paradise and a certain loosening of the older strict moral codes.
Just after the madness of SXSW, I was a passenger in a car accident in Florida. I was bruised, a car or two were totaled, and life still hasn’t gotten back to normal. But...
