My true love: “Red, White and Royal Blue.”
For the last good while I’ve been low-key obsessed with the novel “Red, White and Royal Blue.” It’s about an alternate timeline where the 2016 election was won by a woman (Ellen Claremont) from Austin. Early on in the book her biracial, bilingual son realizes that he’s bisexual and is in the middle of a relationship with Prince Harry of England.
The novel has everything: politics, a Texas angle, true love and transgender bodyguards at the White House!
Written by 28 year old woman Casey McQuiston, the book has sparked both an upcoming Amazon movie this August (I cannot wait!) and Etsy shops selling “Claremont 2020” shirts.
With all the pressure to find love in this world, and all of the cultural effort put forth towards finding “the one” maybe we should instead take up with escapist politically-based fiction?
The book was a NYT bestseller and was on NPR. It’s not under the radar, it was just under my radar.
I’ve gotten obsessed with books before. There are worst things I could be doing with my life.
