Seeing the Goth King At SXSW
Everyone has a past, mine happens to be a little goth.
Yet back in the late 80s when I listened to a lot of goth music, I didn’t know who had made a lot of the music I listened to. Between homemade cassettes that were long lost copies of copies of copies, the sound quality was terrible, and any labels had long since detached.
At SXSW this year, my husband insisted that we go to see the Gary Numan show, when he played before Blondie. He kept telling me, “Don’t worry, you’ll know who he is.”
Before the show, all that I connected with Numan was his 80s hit song “Cars.” After the show, I recognized him as the architect of the songs I listened to in many a doom disco.
A few days later, I spotted some Goth fans all dressed up for the second SXSW Gary Numan show, and I grabbed Greg and his partner for an impromptu photo shoot on Red River!
Below are some pictures of the Gary Numan show, and some of the fans who came out to see him at SXSW.
